What is the consequence when you treat your best friend like a slave and you don't learn your geography? You get struck by lightening! Well, not necessarily, but there is definitely a consequence to being self absorbed and inconsiderate...you end up alone when you need help the most. Miss Electricity is the story of Violet, a fifth grader with the passion to be great. She is accompanied by her "assistant" Freddy, who is really her best friend. Freddy helps Violet in her pursuits to "break a world record!" Violet's drive soon leads her to desperation after the worst day ever at school. In the pouring rain she protests the world in a rebellious gesture with her arms raised in the air. The universe strikes back, twice. Violet is struck by lightening two consecutive times.
Violet, after this new rare event, thinks she now has the super power to control electricity, which makes her special in her own right. Freddy, the ever obedient assistant, but really over protective friend, helps convince Violet that she can control electricity. The whole charade comes crashing down when Violet disregards Freddy in front of the two antagonist bullies of the drama, and tries to power down the entire school. This, of course, doesn't work and Violet is left alone without the bullies or her friend. Violet then takes a trip to Mount Olympus to have a little chat with Athena the goddess of wisdom. Athena tells Violet that she never controlled electricity, she had been dismissive and abusive to Freddy, who was not her assistant but truly her best friend.
Miss Electricity developed into a thru-composed work. Initially music was to be provided for break-out dance moments by the characters. Upon completion of the production process the piece had original music underneath the entire narrative of the play. Kingsley Perry provided the spring board for the straight laced funk dance music composed for the show. The show was designed for the touring constraints of performing in elementary schools throughout San Diego.
